CANDIDATE - SOMERSET VILLAGE BOARD
My name is Brandon Koziol and I’ve lived in Somerset with my wife and 3 kids since early 2016. I work at Andersen Windows as a Lead II with my short-term goal being to become a Supervisor. I’ve held leadership positions in nearly every work environment I’ve been in including landscaping, the automotive industry and most recently, the manufacturing industry. I haven’t held a public office position before, but I feel that my work experience, pride in our community and ability to adapt will help me take on this responsibility. I am choosing to run to provide Somerset with some key things that I think we could do better on.
#1 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT – you’ve all spoken loud and clear, we need to be better at involving the residents on making decisions and giving people an opportunity to contribute. This could include a village website that’s easier to navigate or postings at local businesses about upcoming conversations.
#2 TRANSPARENCY – this is a hard thing to quantify but a lot of people feel left in the dark on motives for decisions which results in a less trusting community. A Trustee owes it to their community to maintain clarity and trust with the residents.
#3 SERVANT LEADERSHIP – Anyone interested in running for this position should understand that they work for YOU! Leadership is great but being a leader for the right reasons is what separates the good from the bad. I’ve heard some great ideas that the people of Somerset would like to see potentially worked on. Things like finding ways to give downtown a facelift, fixing our roads, creating a place for our teenagers to hang out – a great topic that I think deserves future discussion and community input. Fixing up our existing parks. Anything the community feels we’re lacking.
One thing I am strongly in favor of is taking care of our existing businesses. This extends far beyond just tubing. We can’t allow ourselves to govern our small businesses out of business or make it difficult to operate. A business should be given the opportunity to thrive or fail under its own practices, it is the village’s responsibility to provide a level playing field with conditions that positively impact Somerset.
I am in favor of sustainable growth. Somerset possesses qualities that can and will attract businesses and additional developers. St. Croix county is one of the fastest growing counties in Wisconsin and we should take advantage of that by creating a larger tax base if and when possible. A great source of tax revenue comes from our businesses and I am in favor of businesses developing to help contribute to improvement and maintenance of Somerset’s infrastructure.
For these reasons, I’ve decided to put my name in the running to potentially be the unwavering voice of the majority of this town. I promise to set aside personal politics and make decisions to move Somerset in the right direction if I’m given the opportunity to serve this community.
Together we can work to eliminate the “Them vs. Us” mentality and begin the stages of becoming “We” again.
